Queensland is on the cusp of a transformative era in infrastructure development, with over $103.9 billion earmarked for major projects over the next five years. This unprecedented investment, detailed in the 2024 Queensland Major Projects Pipeline Report, underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, boosting economic growth, and preparing for future challenges. Two flagship projects the Cross River Rail in Brisbane and the Rockhampton Ring Road in Central Queensland exemplify this ambitious agenda.

The 2024 Queensland Major Projects Pipeline Report points to a “golden decade” of infrastructure investment, with the total pipeline value increasing by 13% compared to the previous year. This surge reflects both the announcement of new projects and cost escalations on existing ones, demonstrating the dynamic and complex nature of infrastructure planning and delivery.

As Queensland prepares for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, these infrastructure projects are not just addressing current needs — they’re laying the foundation for a more connected, sustainable, and prosperous future. Strategic investments in transport and regional development signal a transformative period that will benefit Queenslanders for generations to come.

Challenges and Outlook

Despite its progress, the Cross River Rail project has faced challenges, including industrial action over pay and conditions. Nevertheless, with construction well underway, the project is on track to significantly improve Brisbane’s transport infrastructure upon completion.

Recent Developments

A major milestone was achieved with the completion of the new Lion Creek Bridge, the first of 18 planned bridges. This structure replaces an outdated timber bridge, offering improved flood resilience and better connectivity for the Pink Lily and Ridgelands communities.
